And at the bottom: A huge sigh of relief. Between the two: Thrills on a unique competition venue. Since 1885, daredevils have been charging headfirst down the Cresta Run, the steep ice canal between St.\u202fMoritz and Celerina. It is not unusual for people to become \u201chigh flyers\u201d here: In famous curves like the Shuttlecock, they sometimes lose contact with the ground &#8211; or rather the mirror-like ice under the runners of their skeleton.<\/p>\n<p>And the Skeleton? Cresta is the original form of this sport. This means that the Cresta Run is the mother of both Skeleton and Cresta. On the Cresta Run the riders ride on their stomach and head first, steering with the use of their bodies and steel spikes on special shoes. Now they have gone even further and turned the sport into an art.&#8221; That&#8217;s what the &#8220;Kulm&#8221; hotelier Peter Badrutt (1850-1907) once said about riding the Cresta.<\/p>\n<p>The sporting art known as the Cresta begins at a good 1880 metres above sea level. Above the &#8220;Kulm&#8221; hotel, the athletes &#8211; and since 2018, female athletes as well &#8211; make a running start and plunge headfirst onto their low sleds and into the approximately 1200 metre long ice canal.<\/p>\n<p>The competitors who start here already understand the essence and the art of Cresta sledding. Incidentally, these bends are named after famous Cresta riders.<\/p>\n<p>Those who reach the Junction Start can easily zoom past at 90 km\/h &#8211; and quickly earn admiring glances.<\/p>\n<p>At the Junction Start, the Cresta beginners are ready and waiting. They are only allowed to start from here &#8211; which is not a bad thing, at least from an aesthetic point of view. On the Shuttlecock, probably the most difficult curve to negotiate on the entire Cresta Run, this saying has been repeated thousands of times over the last 130 years.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who is too fast here and can no longer control their direction will fly out of the turn &#8211; into the deep snow or into the straw that has been specially placed here.<\/p>\n<p>The Shuttlecock is thus a kind of safety valve that is intended to prevent accidents on the following sections of the track. What unites the two sports of Bobsleigh and Cresta, as well as the two runs, is pioneering spirit, sportsmanship &#8211; and names like William Henry Bulpett.<\/p>\n<p>The Briton William Henry Bulpett was in charge of the construction of the Cresta Run in 1884 and served twice as president of the &#8220;St Moritz Tobogganing Club\u00bb. In 1889, he also commissioned the construction of the first multi-seater steel bobsleigh in St.\u202fMoritz. Especially not on the &#8220;most famous of the crooked runs of the Alps&#8221;, the Cresta Run.<\/p>\n<p>Those who make it to the finish are lucky &#8211; or have mastered the great challenges of the most famous of all crooked runs, the winding Cresta Run. Gibson saw the complexity of the challenges as early as 1894: &#8220;A sharp turn is closely followed by at least one more, often two others.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the Cresta Run, both fame and glory await. At least for the lucky &#8220;finishers&#8221;. According to an authoritative statistic, every 14th run ends in the infamous curve called the The use of the English language is no coincidence: the Cresta Run was initially planned and built by British winter guests, or more precisely: by the five members of the &#8220;Outdoor Amusements Commitee of the Kulm Hotel&#8221; in St.\u202fMoritz.<\/p>\n<p>Through the Cresta Run, these gentlemen not only intend to create a pastime in the form of a sporting competition, they also want to outdo their big tobogganing rival, the town of Davos. And they succeed: The Cresta Run becomes the longest and most challenging track anywhere in the Alps. The track does not follow an existing road course, but is specially formed &#8211; year after year \u2013 out of the winter landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Even today, the Cresta Run is built over several weeks and is usually opened during Advent. As in the early days, the &#8220;St Moritz Tobogganing Club&#8221; is responsible for the construction, and as in the early days, a well-coordinated team continues to shape the icy sculpture today. Bulpett further developed the &#8220;America&#8221;. The skeleton-like frame &#8211; which gave it its name &#8211; was now made of steel, while the sled appeared more flexible and easier to steer than conventional sleds. From 1890 on, the skeleton is the racing model of choice used on the Cresta Run. This is no coincidence: Major Bulpett knows his way around fast sleds and icy tracks. At the first three &#8220;Grand Nationals&#8221; (1885-1887), the best times were achieved on sleds and while seated. Then came the \u201cAmerica\u201d and the head-first style predominated. The Cresta is different: in the open curves, it takes physical effort &#8211; and razor-sharp runner blades &#8211; to prevent them from flying out.
